The Browns Ferry Nuclear Plant is dedicated to the safe, reliable and efficient production of electricity. In the event of a potential emergency at the Plant, Limestone County Emergency Management Agency will be notified immediately. EMA would then notify you if you need to take any action.

  • How will I be notified of an emergency?
    There are several ways you could be notified of an emergency at the Nuclear Plant.
  • Warning Sirens
    Sirens are tested on the first Wednesday of each month at 9:15 a.m.
  • Emergency Alert Stations
    In the event of an emergency, tune to a local Emergency Alert Station for information.
  • Locate your Zone and Sector
    Knowing which Zone and Sector you’re in will help you know what to do in the event of an emergency at the Nuclear Plant.
  • What if my children are in school?
    Schools in the area around the Nuclear Plant have emergency plans for school children.
  • What if my child is at preschool or another special facility? 
    All special facilities around the Nuclear Plant have emergency plans for those attending.
  • What if I’m told to Shelter-In-Place?
    If you are told to Shelter-In-Place, you will need to follow specific instructions that tell you what to do to be safe.
  • What if I’m told to Evacuate?
    If you are told to Evacuate, you will need to follow specific instructions that tell you where to go and what to take with you.
  • If I have to evacuate, where do I go?
    If you are told to evacuate, there are signs to follow to direct you to your Reception Center.
  • Potassium Iodide (KI)
    Potassium Iodide, also known as KI, is a non-prescription drug that may prevent the thyroid gland from absorbing radioactive iodine. Taking KI is one of the protective actions that might be recommended during an emergency at the Nuclear Plant.

    The Nuclear Regulatory Commission has established four classifications to describe a nuclear emergency.
